WordPress Tips: How to Change your WordPress Database Prefix

One of the way to increase your wordpress blog security is by changing your wordpress database prefix from the default prefix “wp_” to “something_”. Here I’d like to share how I do it for all my wordpress blog everytime I start a new blog using selfhosted wordpress:

1. Backup your WordPress database to an *.sql file.

  • From your hosting cpanel, use the phpMyAdmin facility, and select your database.

  • Go to Export Tab. Choose SQL Option. At the Structure part, tick boxes: Structure, Add DROP TABLE/VIEW/PROCEDURE/FUNCTION, Add IF NOT EXISTS, Add AUTO_INCREMENT value, Enclose table and field names with backquotes. At the Data part, tick boxes: Data, Complete Inserts, Use hexadecimal for BLOB. Set Export Type: INSERT.

  • Tick option Save as File. Click Go. And save the *.sql file to your hardisk.

2. Copy the backup file as your backup before changing anything. Then open the *.sql file using text editor (Notepad). Find and Replace the “wp_” text to “something_” (eg. “xz_”).

3. Now DROP all tables in your wordpress database. Please do NOT drop the Database though :-)

  • Go to the Structure Tab. Check All Table, and select option DROP.

4. Import backup file *.sql that have been edited to your WordPress Database.

  • Go to Import Tab, then enter the location of the *.sql file on your hardisk. Click Go.

5. Now all table prefix in your wordpress database have been replaced to the “something_”. The last step is making it recognized by changing your config.php file.

  • From your hosting cPanel, go to File Manager and edit the wp-config.php file that is located on the root directory of your domain.
  • Change the $table_prefix = ‘wp_’ text to $table_prefix = ‘something_’

6. When you do the above process, all your plugin is automatically deactivated. You should manually activate it from your wordpress panel.

That’s it! The process to change your prefix wordpress table of your blog is done. Now your wordpress security is increased.

    Hello, i guess this is as good of a place as any to post and let you know. I went to subscribe to your RSS feed, and when i clicked it i got an error that said “Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING” followed by other gibberish that scrolled off the screen. I had to force the page to stop loading because it locked up my browser. Cheers.
